In 2017 we established the first ReFOCUS media lab inside One Happy Family Community Center on the Greek island of Lesvos.
Our photography and storytelling workshops were in such high demand that we created our foundation in 2018. At that time the island continued to host over 20,000 asylum seekers with more arriving every day, and no formal education or skills training was available.
One Happy Family was built ‘with and for’ asylum seekers, and it has been a dream to help this community continue to thrive over the year.
Lesvos remains one of the most important asylum seeking hubs in Europe, with most people trying to cross from Turkey to the European Union via Greek islands. Thousands of people are currently forced to endure another winter in the “temporary” Mavrovouni camp, and still no formal education opportunities are provided by the government. Our partner Europe_Cares has continued the legacy started by One Happy Family, and their Parea Community Center hosts our daily media skills classes and workshops.
OUR media skills program
developing the skills every company and community needs
ReFOCUS works with teenagers and young adults living in refugee camps, shelters for minors, and community centers. We have developed intensive semester-based media skills programs to help develop portfolios, original content. and the confidence needed to secure employment.
Our media skills training program starts with a foundational understanding of photography, then moves in visual storytelling, filmmaking, graphic design, music video, podcasting, audio engineering and live event production.
Our mission is to create a global network or media labs equipping asylum seekers and refugees with filmmaking and modern media skills to overcome the challenges they face. Access to formal education remains non-existent in Greece, while language and financial constraints add to the mental health issues endured over years of displacement. On a daly basis our community fights against it all, and you can help be part of the solution.
