“SLAVA UKRAINI!”
“GLORY TO UKRAINE”

LVIV, UKRAINE PC: Douglas Herman @dfherman

For the past month REfocus cofounders sonia and douglas nandzik-herman have been present at the Polish-Ukrainian border supporting and reporting on the crisis.

While conducting needs assessments, providing immediate aid through convoys into ukraine, they’ve also been filming a new feature documentary “today, tonight, tomorrow” about the ways civil society is stepping UP TO support ukrainians in UNEXPECTED WAYS.

A rough cut of the feature film will be presented at Movies That Matter Film Festival in The Hague on April 15, 2022.

Medical and Humanitarian Convoy- Lviv, Ukraine pc: Douglas Herman @dfherman

The conditions on the ground in Lviv, and on both sides of the border are very fluid. reception centers and railway stations on the Polish side can be overwhelmed without notice, and a rising consistency of air-raid alerts and rocket attacks in Lviv and the western part of the country have become the new normal. millions have already fled, and the numbers will continue to rise as the western part of the country is simply no longer safe.

the near-universal spirit of solidarity and civil action remains a constant and a necessity. But eastern European nations, Poland in particular, will most assuredly struggle with integrating millions of new arrivals into an already-strained and unprepared job market. ReFOCUS aims to address this issue by establishing new media creation labs to provide those with experience a chance to integrate, and media-skills training programs for those interested in training and securing employment.

Our proven model of training refugees on Lesvos and athens provides Refocus a unique way to address the challenges ukrainians and Polish communities will face into the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, our time working along both sides of the border and in Lviv make it possible for refocus to sustain existing networks that ensure vital medical supplies and humanitarian aid get into Ukraine and to the people who need it the most.
