ROHINGYA CRISIS

IN JANUARY we TRAVELED TO BANGLADESH TO INVESTIGATE THE WORLD'S LARGEST REFUGEE CAMP. THE PREVIOUS AUGUST OVER 600,000 ROHINGYA MUSLIMS FLED ETHNIC CLEANSING IN NEIGHBORING MYANMAR. AFTER RETURNING WE VISITED SCHOOLS IN AMERICA TO SPEAK WITH STUDENTS ABOUT A CRISIS WHICH QUICKLY FELL FROM THE HEADLINES DESPITE A STAGGERING ONE MILLION REFUGEES. 

ORIGINS OF 1976KM (Now ReFOCUS Media Labs)

IN 2017 AśKA DYLUS, SONIA NANDZIK AND DOUGLAS HERMAN FOUNDED 1976KM TO PROVIDE REFUGEES AND AID WORKERS A PLATFORM TO SHARE THE REALITIES ON THE FRONT LINES OF THIS CRISIS. INITIALLY CREATED AS A BLOG TO REACH A POLISH SPEAKING AUDIENCE, THE TRIO QUICKLY INCORPORATED PHOTOGRAPHY, VIDEO AND STARTED THEIR OWN PODCAST TO HELP INCREASE AWARENESS AND ENGAGEMENT IN THE CHALLENGES FACED BY REFUGEES. Their work has evolved into experiential education courses in modern media creation skills, providing refugees with the tools needed to tell their own stories.
