Two years ago we had investigative journalist and filmmaker Jordan Siegel on our show (S03E19) to discuss her reporting and film ”Invisible War." At the time, 53 million Sudanese were already trapped for over a year inside a brutal civil war between warring military factions- RSF (Rapid Support Forces) and SAF (Sudanese Armed Forces). Since then the fighting has only escalated, while critical aid reaching the people has precipitously dropped.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, and there is currently no crisis greater than Sudan to discuss the necessity of the convention. We're honored to have Jordan back to update us on the past two years of developments, and the critical work she and her colleagues are doing at the Sudan Human Rights Hub to document and archive the war crimes being perpetrated on both sides of the war.

In April 2026, around 250 Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals were reported missing after a boat departing from Teknaf capsized in the Andaman Sea. Only 9 people survived. EU-TURKEY DEAL TO NEW MIGRATION PACT

This March marked 10 years since the EU–Turkey deal, Europe's first formal attempt at off-shoring the "refugee crisis", which trapped tens of thousands of asylum seekers within legal limbo and inhumane conditions on island camps for years.

This initial approach has evolved into the more formalized framework of the current EU Migration Pact, which prioritizes border externalization, accelerated asylum procedures, and increased returns.

We also discuss the human consequence to these policies in Greece, with stricter laws curtailing access to asylum and contributed to the criminalisation of humanitarian actors, and the growing legal risks faced by NGOs and volunteers, notably the case of Tommy Olsen- founder of Aegean Boat Report, who Greece issued a European Arrest Warrant.

4 YEARS OF WAR IN UKRAINE

The UK is facing growing problems with accommodation for asylum seekers. It relies on temporary and hotel accommodation, which causes many problems.

Luckily there are initiatives that took a significantly different approach. An organisation called Refugees at Home pairs asylum seekers and Brits with a spare bedroom, which creates a completely new level of hospitality.

Amber Bauer - a founder of forRefugees decided on trying out this solution years ago and has been part of the movement and a “mom” to many asylum seekers ever since.

According to the Food Insecurity in Greece and Across the Globe report, more than 900 million people worldwide experience severe food insecurity, with future projections showing increasing trends.

One of the most vulnerable groups experiencing food scarcity are refugees and asylum seekers. The issue lies not only in the amount of food but also its quality. The food distributed in refugee camps lacks nutritious values and is far from being sufficient. This impacts refugees' everyday life but also their future as the lack of sufficient and nutritious food during early childhood has serious long-term negative implications on children's physical and cognitive development.

In today’s episode we discuss not only the problem, but also one of the solutions. Evelina Eskenazi - the Founder and Director of the Saffron Kitchen Project in Athens, GR describes their approach to serving nutritious and dignifying meals.

Greece struggles with a serious housing crisis. Walking down the streets of Athens you will notice many homeless people. Many of them are refugees and asylum seekers who after receiving their asylum decision were forced to leave the camp within 7 days. Without any integration classes in camps, and very rare Greek lessons, most people find it extremely difficult to find a new accommodation and even harder to convince the owner to rent it to a person with a refugee background. Sadly there are no structural solutions, and there are very few services addressing this issue.
